A large porcelain patio in Ripley, Surrey that had developed patchy algae staining and general discolouration across the light grey tiles — the kind of organic growth that makes even new-looking porcelain look tired and reduces the appeal of what is otherwise a substantial, well-laid outdoor space.
The problem: algae and organic staining on light grey porcelain
Light-coloured porcelain shows organic staining quickly — the contrast between clean tile and algae-covered tile is stark, and once staining becomes patchy across a large area it affects the whole look of the garden. This patio in Ripley was a significant outdoor entertaining space that had lost its appeal. The tree cover and sheltered aspect of the garden meant algae was establishing quickly and spreading across the surface.
What we did
- Soft-washed the full porcelain surface at low pressure appropriate for tile — high pressure can cause micro-damage to the glaze on porcelain and should be avoided
- Used specialist porcelain cleaning solution to lift the organic staining fully from the tile surface
- Cleaned the grout lines and tile edges throughout
- Rinsed the full area and checked for any remaining patches before leaving
The result
The porcelain came back to a clean, even colour across the full patio area. The customer had outdoor furniture set up for the season and could see immediately how much better the space looked — the patio was the centrepiece of the garden again rather than something they were trying to avoid looking at. On porcelain this size and colour, the difference a professional clean makes is very noticeable.
