A large Victorian-style conservatory in Shalford, Surrey with a tiled and glass panel roof that had built up a heavy layer of algae and lichen — the roof was dark green in patches, the white uPVC framework had discoloured, and the decorative ridge finials were barely visible under the organic growth.

The problem: algae and lichen on a mixed tiled and glass conservatory roof
Conservatories with mixed roof systems — tiled sections combined with glass or polycarbonate panels — present a cleaning challenge because different materials require different approaches. High-pressure washing suitable for a tiled section can cause damage or leaking at the glass panel junctions. This conservatory in Shalford had both, along with a full decorative ridge system and finials that needed careful cleaning to avoid damage to the uPVC detailing.
What we did
- Soft-washed the tiled roof sections at appropriate pressure to remove algae and lichen without disturbing the tile bedding
- Carefully cleaned the glass and polycarbonate panel sections and the junctions between the two roof types
- Cleaned the full uPVC framework, ridge, gutters and decorative finials
- Rinsed the full roof and confirmed no leaks at junctions before leaving

The result
The conservatory came back to clean white uPVC throughout with the roof clear and the decorative ridge detail fully visible. The difference to the light inside the conservatory was immediately noticeable — cleaning the roof panels lets significantly more light through. The customer was delighted with how the property looked from the garden. A clean like this typically lasts two to three years before the next treatment is required.
