A basement lightwell at a property in Godalming, Surrey — the kind of recessed concrete well that houses a cellar or lower-ground-floor window — that had accumulated years of organic debris, black mould on the render walls, and compacted material on the cobble base. Left untreated, lightwells like this become a route for damp to track into the building below.

The problem: mould, debris and damp risk in the lightwell
Lightwells are inherently problematic — they’re recessed, shaded and poorly ventilated, which means organic material drops in and stays there, moisture sits against the walls, and mould establishes on the render. Over time a blocked or dirty lightwell stops functioning as it should, preventing light from reaching the window below and allowing damp to work its way into the surrounding structure. This one had black mould covering the upper render sections and had accumulated a significant layer of leaf debris and organic matter on the cobble base.
What we did
- Removed all leaf debris, organic material and compacted matter from the cobble base of the lightwell
- Treated and cleaned the black mould from the rendered walls with appropriate biocidal wash
- Pressure-washed the full lightwell interior including walls, base cobbles and the window frame surround
- Cleared the drainage point at the base and confirmed it was flowing freely before leaving

The result
The lightwell walls came back to clean white render and the cobble base was fully clear. The window at the base could actually let light through again. For the customer, the main concern was damp prevention — a clean, draining lightwell significantly reduces the risk of moisture tracking into the building below, and the work was completed in a single visit with no specialist equipment needed beyond what we carry as standard.
