That was exactly the case on this recent job in Knaphill, Surrey, where years of moss, leaves and silt had turned a working gutter into a blocked, waterlogged trough.
The problem: a blocked, overflowing gutter
When we arrived, the rear gutter was full to the brim. Moss had crept down from the roof tiles, leaves had built up over several seasons, and the whole run was holding standing water with nowhere to drain. Left like this, a blocked gutter quickly leads to water running down the brickwork, damp patches inside, and in winter the added weight and ice can pull the guttering away from the fascia altogether.
What we did
Working safely from above, we cleared the full length of the guttering by hand and flushed it through, then checked the flow down to the downpipe:
- Removed all the moss, leaves and silt blocking the gutter run
- Cleared the standing water and checked the gutter falls correctly to the downpipe
- Flushed the gutter through so water runs away freely again
- Tidied up, leaving the patio and borders below clean
The result
The difference speaks for itself. The gutter is clear from end to end, water flows straight to the downpipe, and the homeowner is protected from the damp and overflow problems a blocked gutter causes. A job like this takes us a short visit but saves a great deal of expensive damage down the line.
