A Surrey property with cast-iron style guttering that had developed leaking joints — water running down the fascia and brickwork rather than flowing to the downpipes. The job combined a full gutter clean with repairs to the failing joints before the problem caused any further damage to the wall below.
The problem: leaking joints and blocked gutters
Cast-iron effect guttering joints can fail over time as the sealant ages, shrinks and loses its bond — particularly at the union sections and end caps where water pressure concentrates. When a joint goes, water overflows at that point every time it rains, running down the fascia and eventually soaking into the brickwork below. This gutter system had multiple failing joints and was also blocked with debris that was adding to the overflow problem.
What we did
- Cleared and flushed the full gutter run, removing all leaves, debris and compacted material
- Inspected all unions, end caps and downpipe connections for failing sealant
- Resealed the leaking joints with appropriate gutter sealant to restore a watertight run
- Tested the flow through to the downpipes and confirmed all sections draining correctly before leaving
The result
All the leaking joints were sealed, the gutters were flowing cleanly to the downpipes, and the customer had confidence the system would handle winter rainfall without sending water down the brickwork. Catching a joint failure early is much cheaper than dealing with the damp ingress that follows if it’s left — most repairs like this can be handled in a single visit alongside a standard gutter clean.
